Effects of Moxa - cauterization on the Decreased Immune Response Induced by Cold Stress in Rats

Abstract
Purpose : In order to study the effects of moxa-cauterization on the decreased immune response induced by cold stress in rats,
Methods : The rats were put at 0¡É for two weeks and thereafter put to cold stress at -10¡É for another two weeks with consecutive daily moxa-cauterization by 3 sessions to the points op P¢¥yesu(BL13) and blank locus at the root of tail, and lymphocytes and CD©þ T cells in the blood and the spleen were measured, and also antigen-antibody reaction was observed by the simple radial immunodiffusion.
Results : 1. Lymphocytes in the blood and the spleen were not increased respectively in the group of moxa-cauterization to P¢¥yesu(BL13) and in the group of moxa-cauterization to the blank locus compared with the control group.
2. CD©þ T cells in the blood were increased with statistical significance both in the group of moxa-cauterization to P¢¥yesu(BL13) and in the group of moxa-cauterization to the blank locus compared with the control group, showed more increases in the group of moxa-cauterization to P¢¥yesu(BL13) than the blank locus.
3. CD©þ T cells in the spleen were increased with statistical significance in the group of moxa-cauterization to P¢¥yesu(BL13) compared with the control group but decreased in the group of moxa-cauterization to the blank locus compared with the contol group.
4. Antigen-antibody reaction was increased with statistical significance both in the group of moxa-cauterization to P¢¥yesu(BL13) and in the group of moxa-cauterization to the blank locus compared with the contol group, showed more increases in the group of moxa-cauterization to P¢¥yesu(BL13) than the blank locus.
Conclusions : The increase of CD©þ T cells in the blood and in the spleen after moxa-cauterization to P¢¥yesu(BL13) in vivo suggests that this treatment helps to increase the immune response, especially in cold stress.
